The focus of my abstract work is the tension that comes from trying to maintain coherence within a space that is always kinetic, always changing and pushing for change. The paintings and drawings sometimes seek a balance between one form and this space, and sometimes between a pair or group of forms and this space. I think of these forms as "characters."

I currently use white as a way to explore this tension. White is pure space and contains many contradictions that I enjoy. It's flat and stark, emphasizing the bounded painting plane, and at the same time it’s vast and accepting. White lets the image be resolved while still in the act of becoming. It lets the marks be grandly ambiguous and cartoonish and humble. White welcomes and threatens, providing a space for the image to exist freely, a moment away from overtaking it.

I hope the pictures give people a way to see the precariousness between the self and an environment in flux, and at the same time the beauty of being present to it.
